My concern here lies in the complexities and paradoxes of Conservative discourse and in the ways in which historical memories can become superimposed on political strategy. I want to think through some of these issues in relation to John Major. The impetus for this was not the fiasco of his so-called Back to Basics programme, although as I write the press is chockfull of 'comment' - most of it scathing, plenty of it lurid. But this is an opportunity to try to put the Back to Basics episode in a broader historical context. In doing so, though more obliquely, I suggest how we might explore some of the cultural components of contemporary Conservatism.
