Isi artikelIn this paper I explore the possibilities of extending a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach to reading play texts. I try to apply the framework developed in Clark (1992). To do this, I use three different texts all concerned with the Gulf war which I have used in my teaching. I firstly illustrate some key concepts and theoretical categories using texts from The Guardian and The Sun and an extract from a play. I then focus in more detail on two readings of the extract (1) from the recent play, The Gulf Between Us. The Truth and Other Fictions, by Trevor Griffiths, with comments on one of the readings by the playwright. I conclude with a few suggestions on how such a critical reading approach can be pedagogically useful.
