Isi artikel
This paper is about the relationship between spoken and written language. It describes some ways that language is used in a specific set of language events, interviews in which unemployed people are assessed and counselled for occupational training. We suggest that these interviews are an example of an increasingly common kind of language event in which talk and writing are combined in the production of a distinctive form of discourse. We then argue that a close consideration of language events of this kind should lead to a revision of how the relationship between spoken and written language has normally been represented in the field of language study. In particular, it questions the conventional treatment of spoken and written language as separate 'modes' and as being associated with separate 'traditions'. We offer instead an analysis in which talk and writing are viewed as constituting the oral and literate dimensions of language events
