Isi artikel
New views of literacy (particularly Street 1984, Barton 1991, Ivanic and Hamilton 1990) emphasize the fact that literacy is not a skill, but a set of practices, culturally shaped and embedded in social action. Taking this view has led us to study literacy in context, both by reading about the work of others (for example Scribner and Cole 1981, Heath 1983, Taylor 1985, Fishman 1988), and by conducting our own research on writing in the community (for example Barton and Padmore 1991). It has also led us to be more conscious of literacy practices around us, and to appreciate that many aspects of literacy practices go beyond the confines of the printed word. Typefaces are interesting; who writes what, when and where is interesting; the physical activity surrounding literacy is interesting. We also became more aware of differences in these aspects of literacy from one location to another, and from one kind of event another. Travelling to different countries particularly forced this on our attention.
