Isi artikelRecent years have seen a growing interest in technology in language teacher education, including the publication of two edited volumes, the creation of special interest groups in both the Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium and European Association for Computer Assisted Language Learning, and a technology standards initiative for language teachers and learners by teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Building on that rising interest in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) education, this article looks at a domain of expertise in CALL beyond that of the typical classroom teacher: the CALL specialist. The article begins by motivating the concept of the CALL specialist, defined as an institutional role embodying deep knowledge and elaborated skill sets in language learning and technology applications within a given subfield. Examples of three CALL specializations are then briefly discussed: pronunciation specialist, distance education specialist, and classroom teaching specialist. Finally, a number of educational options for CALL specialists are reviewed, including certification, dedicated courses, projects, communities of practice, and mentoring.
