Abstract
Background Elderly people are vulnerable to degenerative diseases, including disability. Disability can be caused by age, nutrition, chronic illness, mental and cognitive disorders as well as external factors such as social support and environmental conditions. The impact of disability, the elderly must live dependent with the help of others. This study was conducted to determine whether there is an association between chronic disease, lifestyle and disability in the elderly.
Methodology. This study is a cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study of 131 elderly (60 years and over) in PUSAKA West Jakarta. Data collection was done by filling out questionnaires about lifestyle (smoking, food record, and food recall), chronic diseases (MMSE and GDS questionnaires) and barthel index (ADL and IADL). Then performed blood pressure measurements and lab tests to check diabetes and dyslipidemia. Data analysis tested with chi square test to find the relationship between variables. The confidence interval in this study is 95%
Results. The percentage of disability in respondents was 25.2% for ADL and 4.6% for IADL. There was a significant relationship between dyslipidemia (p = 0.026), cognitive impairment (p = 0.021), and depression (p = 0.015) on ADL disability. There was also a significant relationship between cognitive impairment (p = 0.031), and physical activity (p = 0.027) on IADL disability. Other factors did not show a significant relationship but, when viewed the percentage of disability experienced by many women, elderly, low education, have a history of chronic diseases and have a lifestyle that is less good.
Conclusion. Disability is a complex state that is influenced by various factors. Controlling for modifiable factors such as illness and lifestyle is needed to create successful aging without disability.
