Abstract
Background: Indonesia has an elderly population of 18,1 million and continues to increase to 36 million elderly by the year 2025.1 An increase in the number of elderly will be accompanied by geriatric syndromes such as instability or balance disorder.2 The balance disorder of elderly itself consists of two factors, and one of them is hypertension.3,4 Hypertension will affect the disturbance of balance by damaging large arteries and decreased microcirculation in the cerebellum area, resulting in decreased ability to maintain balance. Given the number of elderly people in Indonesia is quite high and not much research on the incidence of fall and hypertension is large enough in elderly then researcher wanted to know the relationship between hypertension and balance disorders in the elderly. Method: This study is a cross sectional study on 76 subjects at the Tresna Werda Budi Mulia Social Institution with exclusion criteria for the use of drugs and suffering from diseases that cause disturbance of balance. Hypertension measurements were performed by the sphygmomanometer while the balance measurement would be performed using Berg Balance Scale.
Result: As many as 44,7% of elderly have more hypertension incidence suffered by elderly woman and 36,9% elderly have high and medium equilibrium risk risk with majority of elderly woman also. The incidence of hypertension in elderly women (34.2%) greater than the elderly men (10.5%). The risk of moderate and high-grade disturbance in elderly women (30.3%) was greater than in the elderly men (6.6%). The test is performed using Chi-Square test where p value is 0,237 (> 0,05).
Conclusion: There is no relationship between hypertension and balance disorders in elderly people at PSTW Budi Mulia.
