Abstract
Background : In 2013, infant mortality rate in Indonesia reached 29,3%. One of the main causes of under-five mortality in Indonesia is Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI). Based on Riskesdas 2013, the prevalence of ARI in Indonesia is 25.0% and most of the patients are aged 1-4 years. East Nusa Tenggara is the province with the highest rates of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) in Indonesia. The prevalence of ARI in East Nusa Tenggara Province in 2013 is 41.7%. The high rates of ARI occurrence among children under five in East Nusa Tenggara province are closely related to factors such as exclusive breastfeeding, immunization status, nutritional status, socioeconomic status, maternal knowledge, mother behavior and household pollution.
Method : This research is a research of analytic descriptive with the cross sectional approachment. Respondents of this study is taken with non-random sampling technique that is purposive sampling, from mother who bring her child and visit to Puskesmas Kota Atambua. Respondents are interviewed and given a questionnaire to determine the factors that affect the incidence of ARI in children under five in Puskesmas Kota Atambua.
Result : The result shows 52,6% (51 toddlers) with ARI and 47,4% (46 toddlers) without ARI. The results of bivariate analysis found an association between exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0,000), immunization status (p = 0,000), nutritional status (p = 0,000), socioeconomic status (p = 0,000), maternal knowledge (p = 0.007), maternal behavior (p = 0,000) and indoor smoking (p = 0,000) with ARI incident in children under five in Puskesmas Kota Atambua. The analysis also found no correlation between age (p = 0,637), cooking fuel (p = 0,474) and the use of mosquito coil (p = 0,183) with ARI incident in children under five in Puskesmas Kota Atambua.
