Abstract
Background. Along with the increasing number of elderly, there is also an increase in health problems that occur in elderly, such as impaired language cognitive function and depression.
Objectives. Determine the association between physical activity and depression with language cognitive function in elderly in Pusaka, West Jakarta.
Methods. This study was a descriptive analytic study with cross sectional design. This study was conducted on subject of Active Aging Research from July 2016-January 2017 who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data were collected using Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire, cognitive function assessment using Verbal Fluency Test (VFT) and Boston Naming Test (BNT), and physical activity assessment using 24 hour Recall.
Results. Physical activity had a significant relationship with language cognitive function using Verbal Fluency Test (p=0,038), but not with Boston Naming Test (p=0,461). In addition, depression didn’t have significant relationship with language cognitive function using Verbal Fluency Test (p=0,455) and Boston Naming Test (p=0,3301). The result of the respondents demography characteristic analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between duration of education and language cognitive function using VFT and BNT instruments (p=0,000).
Conclusion. There is a significant relationship between physical activity with language cognitive function using VFT, but not with BNT. In addition, depression doesn’t have significant relationship with language cognitive function using VFT and BNT
