Humor plays an important role in our everyday interaction. We use humor in our daily communication. We could easily find humor in a comic. Language of humor in a comic is produced by the author. Humor in this study is produced through creating an incongruity in the punchline. The author is carefully and intentionally creating the incongruity in the punchline. The characteristic of punchline is clear, that it must consist of incongruity. Hence, the incongruity should be delivered intentionally. According to Suls (1972), incongruity is a violation of what our “normal” expectations, as described by human general knowledge that will provoke laughter. When the author twists our expectations, then he will produce incongruity. This incongruity is expected to triggered laughter. Further, Suls (1972) classifies the types of incongruity based on his Two-Stage Model of incongruity into three types of cognitive rules: the (1) Logical Proposition, (2) Fact of experience, and (3) Definition. Hence, the author of Garfield’s comic uses the incongruity through Suls’ Cognitive Rule to deliver the humor in the punchline. This study shows that incongruity can be manipulated in humorous end through the punchline. In other words, the study of humor indirectly allows the reader to explore the incongruity in the punchline.
