Isi artikel
Although nowadays there are many international programs for students of economics, where they study their courses in English, most schools of economics still have Indonesian as the sole medium of instruction. As a result, their students do not learn English from classroom interaction and have to develop their English competence in a separate English class. In practice, most schools only allocate 2 to 6 credits for English, which are of course insufficient to produce competent users of English. Therefore, designing an efficient and effective course for developing students’ competence of English is a must. Though it is also possible to have separate courses for the different skills, the four language skills can be merged in one course. This paper presents the possibility of integrating the spoken and written skills of using English as a means of communication in an English class. The students are made familiar with business English, where they learn how to use both spoken and written English for business purposes. The basic oral communicative functions and their relevant materials in spoken English are first discovered. Then, in line with the oral communicative functions and materials, the written ones are identified.
