This research was mainly to explore how students increase their vocabulary by using authentic materials. I employed a qualitative method to find out what students did to increase vocabulary and how students responded to use authentic material. It was a case study involving three students who were taking a course of vocabulary and idiom. Questionnaire and interview served as the data collection method. The result of this research indicated that students increased their vocabulary through ways attending every class, discussing text with friends to applying vocabulary in daily activity. How students responded to authentic material dealing with the selection of text. Students had their own freedom to choose text that they like, encouraged students to involve in each discussion and high self confident came up. Based on these findings, it is recommended for teachers that they should explicit in stating their expectation on what students should achieve. Meanwhile, although student themselves who provide texts, they should select texts based on their reading skill, in case of choosing the easy ones.
