Isi artikelThis paper presents a small-scale empirical study to analyse the recurring problems on not only the reception of Phonology but also the teaching of the said subject. A group of students is asked to complete a questionnaire about the process and results of their learning to analyse the reasons behind the high students’ failing rate. A different set of questionnaire will be handed out to the teachers of Phonology to collect the data on both the challenges they face when teaching Phonology and the possible strategies they use to make the subject less complicated. The gathered data combined with the data from the students’ questionnaire will be used to synthesize a conceptual understanding about the core issues in the learning and teaching of Phonology. The resulting outcomes are structured to better comprehend students’ difficulties and formulate what possibly becomes an alternative approach to the teaching of Phonology.
