Isi artikelUsing a textbook for a Reading Course, teacher seems to have a simple task: they may not have to make their own teaching module as the teaching-learning materials are presented in the textbook, which generally has been selected for the provision of graded texts and exercises adjusted to the level of language of students, and of various interesting topics corresponding with the students’ age and interests, not to mention its eye-catching layout. Yet, when the teaching takes place, some teachers may find using the text book tedious, and some others find that it does not take students long time to finish one chapter in one session. In addition, students might feel bored with the same style of material presentation in the textbook, and might complain that either their textbook or their teacher is monotonous. Precisely that particular point, I think, is the exciting challenge for the teachers of a Reading Course. This article will discuss about how to combine a textbook with other relevant materials and activities in a Reading course to achieve one goal: creating independent and avid readers of English who are able to read selectively to meet their own needs.
