Isi artikelEach language may have its own system different from other languages. It is, therefore, possible to see the similarities and the differences between two languages. One aspect that is significant to be observed is the phrase structures, especially noun phrases structures for it is completing the idea of verbs and prepositions. X-bar theory is used to observe the deep structure and surface structure of the noun phrases systematically. The result of the study shows that noun phrases of English do not need any movements of the elements, while some noun phrases structures of Bahasa Indonesia need some movements of the elements and that there are some obligatory elements of English noun phrase, like the articles as the specifier. This comparative study on noun phrase of English and Bahasa Indonesia will be useful for the language learners, both learners of English and Bahasa Indonesia, so that, hopefully, the mistake on syntactic structure of both languages can be reduced.
