Isi artikelThe Presence of libraries today is very urgent need, so as to support the teaching-learning process. Educations and authorities who are involved in education and librarians who supply the teaching materials are now actively working together to improve the role of libraries in many educational institutions. at the same time, they are trying to increase children's interest in reading since the rate of Indonesian children's reading interest is relatively lower compared with other Asian nations. One of the methods to stimulate children's and students' interest in reading is to energize the role of libraries in the institutions where the teaching-learning process takes place. The Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) is one of such institution. As we all know, the pesantren represents the oldest educational institution in Indonesia. On the other hand, because of this history, the Islamic boarding school is often regarded as a traditional and static institution that is no longer suited for moderm world. Before the 20th century, people never thought that an Islamic boarding school urgently needed to estabilsh a library, since all sources of knowledge were inthe hands of its scholars ('ulama') who taugh in pesantren could freely be borrowed by their students. Today the conditions have changed, and pesantren must adapt, too. A boarding school as traditional institution must have library so that its students can read a wide variety of books: not only the books taught in class, but also any other book that they feel necessary or interested. The role of the library is very crucial in boardening the knowledge of students. Besides all of the arguments mentioned above, the Idonesian economy has not recovered yet and purchasing power is low, whereas the price of books is quite expensive that it is not easy for students to buy the necessary books. In addition, to stimulate students' interest in reading, a library is essential to be established. But in relity, many scholars and librarians pay little attention to pesantren libraries.
