Abstract
Background: The number of elderly in Indonesia increases every year. Hypertension is the most common disease in elderly. As many as 60.7% of elderly people in Indonesia have hypertension. Hypertension can disrupt the psychosocial elderly and can cause depression side effect. Anti-hypertensive medicine which is consumed by elderly can cause depression. Depression in elderly has worse prognosis compared to depression in adults. Depression can decrease quality of life of elderly. The purpose of this study was determining association between hypertension and depression events in elderly.
Methodology: This research is an analytical descriptive research with cross-sectional data collection on 138 elderly aged 60 years and above in Tresna Budi Mulia nursing home Jakarta. Hypertension data was collected with direct measurements used sfignomanometer and stethoscope. Depression data was measured by Geriatric Depression Scale. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 22.
Result: There were eleven elderly men (22%) who experienced hypertension and 40 elderly women (78%) who experienced hypertension. There were 18 elderly men (35%) who were depressed and 33 elderly women (65%) who were depressed. Chi-square analysis showed p value of 0.468 (p=0.05).
Conclusion: The number of elderly women who experienced hypertension and depression are more than men. There was no association between hypertension and depression events on elderly in general, men and women at Tresna Budi Mulia nursing home Jakarta
