Abstract
Background. Diarrhea is one of the ten most leading causes of death in the world. In 2015, it was estimated that 162.000 citizens of DKI Jakarta had diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by contaminated water. Contaminated ice cubes can be a source of waterborne disease. Microbiologically, the quality of ice cubes is needed to be examined, to ensure its standard as regulated by Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia.
Objective. To assess microbiologic quality of ice cubes sold in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and its surrounding area, as well as its association with beverage sellers’ characteristics.
Method. This study was performed in October 2017 – December 2017. This was a descriptive analytic study using cross sectional design. Assessment of microbiologic quality of ice cube was conducted with Most Probable Number (MPN) method. Beverage sellers’ characteristics was obtained by interviews and observations guided by questionnaire. Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test was used to determine the association of both variables. Samples were originated from Carina Sayang Cluster, Semanggi and Pluit Campus of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
Results. In total, there were 18 samples collected. Ninety four percent samples were contaminated with coliform and faecal coliform bacteria (17/18), with various degree of MPN index. Ten of 18 (56.6%) samples were contaminated with E. coli. Most of beverage sellers had poor hygiene and sanitation, indicated by unclosed trash container, fly contamination, and poor habit of hand washing before food preparation. Statistically there was no significant association between microbiologic quality of ice cubes and beverage sellers’ characteristics, considering that only one sample showed appropriate.
Conclusions. Ninety-four percent of ice cubes sold in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and its surrounding area are not appropriate microbiologically regarding to Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia regulations. This study showed no statistical association between microbiologic quality of ice cubes and beverage sellers’ characteristics.
