Isi artikelThe longevity of the Japanese has been attributed to a variety of causes ranging from their dietary habits, to the country's national health care system, as well as the comparatively high levels of literacy and education of the citizenry dating back to the Edo period (1600-1868). For example, the literacy rate among the Japanese (including both the elite classes and common citizens) at the time of the demise of the Tokugawa shougunate in 1868 has been estimated to be as high as 40%, which compares favorably with many Western nations at the time (Duke, 2009). Among the competing explanations for Japanese longevity, one factor that has received growing scholarly attentions is the role of social cohesion.
