Isi artikelSixty 3rd and 6th grade students and their seven teachers were interviewed about their perceptions of what makes a student a successful responder in classroom interaction. Those students who had been designated by their teachers as ‘effective responders’ (ERs) could articulate not only behavioural characteristics of an effective responder (attentiveness, appropriate bid to respond, exhibiting confidence, not guessing) but also content features of an effective response (using the ‘right words’ and giving a complete and understandable answer). The ‘unsuccessful responders’ (URs), on the other hand, mainly focused on behaviour and were less able to articulate what makes a response successful. ER and UR interview responses are compared, teachers’ responses are summarised, and implications of this research for classroom practice are explored.
