This paper argues that the method of 'collaborative modelling', originally developed for the teaching of reading skills, may be utilised in generating and assessing pupil talk within the classroom. Pairs of pupils were given different texts from Science, English, and Geography and asked to read these and then re-present them in another form (illustration, drawing, table, chart and so on). The talk which emerged during this process was recorded by the pupils themselves. The talk was then transcribed and analysed using five categories of 'talk' developed from relevant source materials in the field of oracy and language in general. The general quality and distribution of the categories of talk were then analysed in relation to pupil age, ability and sex. The findings clearly indicates the value of the talk which emerges from collaborative modelling in pairs, and indicates the different linguistic strategies pupils adopt in the task of interrogating texts.
