Isi artikel
This article represents an effort to understand the problems that aboriginal students in a post-secondary professional programme experienced in mastering the theoretical components of their course of study. In doing so, it explores selected differences between contextualised and personalised discourse employed in many aboriginal communities and the decontextualised and impersonal scientific discourse common in school. A number of strategies for overcoming difficulties associated with these differences are offered, but are tempered with an acknowledgement that school and scientific discourse and knowledge can act both as a liability and a service to aboriginal people.
