Isi artikelSince establishment as a medical discipline, specialist palliative care (SPC) has expanded from the initial goal of providing holistic care for dying cancer patients and their families, to include those with non-malignant, progressive and life-limiting conditions such as heart failure (HF). This shift is reflected both nationally and internationally in healthcare policies and treatment guidelines that advocate a palliative care approach in the care of those with HF, including the involvement of SPC when necessary (National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care (US), 2004; National Heart Foundation of Australia & Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, 2006; NHS Modernisation Agency: Coronary Heart Disease Collaborative, 2004; NICE, 2003).
