Prochaska's commentary,"Flaws in the Theory or Flaws in the Study," (Prochaska, 2009) on our paper (Aveyard et al., 2009) distracts us from the main issues. Like othersm we have tested more intensive stage-based interventions against a less intensive 'standard' control (Aveyard, Griffin, Lawrence, & Cheng, 2003). In the initial trial report and in the current paper we showed that the transtheoretical model (TTM) interventions were not more effective in increasing cessation nor in increasing stage movement.
