"The Effect of Transtheoretical Model based interventions on smoking cessation", the study by Aveyard and colleagues in the current issue, was designed to compare stage-matched treatments to a stage inappropriate treatment on stage progression in a population of smokers in the UK (Aveyard, 2009). An innovative part of this study was to apply content analysis to the standard treatment control condition to determine if this treatment was indeed stage inappropriate. What was discovered, instead, was that the standard treatment was in fact stage appropriate.
