Isi artikelThe paper analyses the interpersonal skills of fifteen 14 year old girls and boys who were participating in group discussions as part of the oral test for the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). The analysis focuses on the pupils' use of minimal responses, interruptions, and questions which draw others into the discussion. It also considers their use of contributions which build on the contributions of others, the introduction of new ideas, and remarks which tend to close down discussion. The results of the analysis show that on the whole the girls were careful listeners and cooperative, generous members of their discussion groups. The boys also tended to try to adopt a cooperative style of discussion, though they were not always successful. The boys were helped to play a constructive role in the discussion by the conversational work that was done by the girls, but the girls did not receive support from the boys in return. The paper concludes with some suggestions for future research and some recommendations for the teaching of oral communication.
