Isi artikelSecond-language acquisition is seldom perfectly natural: in many cases, conflicts arise because of the frustrations inherent in imbalanced bilingualism. This article reflects a nine-month ethnographic study of a four-year-old girl faced with an abrupt transition from monolingualism to bilingualism. Her conflicts, characterised by anxiety, resistance, and a search for propriety, are first outlined; then follows a description of her coping strategies, based on linguistic invention, the exploitation of family networks, and language compartmentalisation; and finally conflict resolution is shown as involving the child in acute analytical observation, cognitive integration, and bilingual literacy development.
