Isi artikel
In highland Puno, Peru, the experience of schooling in Spanish creates stress for many Quechua-speaking children. This paper, based on data gathered during a two-year ethnographic sociolinguistic study, explores language and interaction behaviours of Quechua children which point to the possibility of a stress reaction on their part. Behaviours of Quechua children in two schools, one with and one without a bilingual programme, are contrasted. Language behaviour is discussed in terms of community domains of language use and of four categories of pupil-to-teacher talk. Interaction is discussed in terms of underparticipation, overparticipation and hostile participation. Implications of the Quechua children's experience for linguistic minority school children elsewhere are noted.
