Isi artikel
Some political implications of reporting linguistic research to the lay public are discussed. The publication in 1983 of John Honey's pamphlet The Language Trap, was widely reported in the British media and provoked correspondence from educationists, linguists and politicians. An analysis of related articles and correspondence in the quality and popular press shows how the professional debate about language education became connected to a much wider political one. It is suggested that key words and ideas in sociolinguistics such as 'linguistic equality'—may systematically be understood in a different sense when used in lay discourse. This may hinder the ability of professionals to communicate their ideas to the wider public.
