Isi artikelWhen French children begin elementary school at 6 they are confronted with a standard language often rather different from that spoken in the family. The author observed 'language time': the children are placed in a situation of communication created wholly artificially with its own laws, standardising constraints, and content. By not relying on the linguistic experience that the children have already acquired, the school situates its requirements both above and below the capabilities of the child. The teachers cannot help the children to advance since they fail to see their real problems.
