Abstract
Background : The increased prevalence of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) led to an increase in caloric intake. SSBs are drinks that are added simple sugars during the production process so as to increase the energy content, but have little other nutrients. Excessive consumption of SSBs may be a cause of obesity. Obesity occurs as a result of the energy imbalance that is usually caused by the energy intake of food chronically exceeds the use of energy, resulting in excessive storage of body fat in adipose tissue.
Methods : The design of this study was conducted cross-sectionally in November 2017 on 38 staff of education at Faculty of Medicine Universitas Atma Jaya (FKUAJ) selected by total sampling method. The data taken are demographic data in the form of sex, body mass index (BMI), and consumption habits of SSBs. SSBs data were obtained from an interview method using Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaires (SQ-FFQ) for one week and BMI data was calculated from height and weight measurements.
Result : Sugar consumption of SSBs was found to be mostly <25 grams / day and the prevalence of obesity was 55.3%, especially in women. Fisher Exact test results show no relationship between the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in packaging with IMT (p = 0.619).
Conclusion : There is no association between the consumption of SSBs and IMT so it is necessary to consider the possibility of other factors, such as food intake and physical activity.
