Isi artikelBecause children’s lives have been completely transformed during the past 150 years by revolutionary changes in the American family, society and economy, an understanding of how the current circumstances of children came about, and of what the future may hold, is possible only by examining historical changes. This paper presents statistics documenting critical changes in family structure and the family economy, and it portrays fundamental causes from the perspective of children and their parents, by drawing on the author’s new socio-historical study America’s children: resources, from family, government, and the economy. The paper highlights the need to use children as the unit of analysis, and to explicitly study children in developing and evaluating public policies. It describes future plans of the U.S. Bureau of the Census for collecting new statistics on children, in part, to assess the effect of public policies on the development and well-being of children.
