Isi artikel
This article presents an educational programme designed for poor families and their children aged 0 to 6 years old which developed from 1972 to 1990 as demand evolved in Chile. In particular, the aim of the project gradually changed from the preparation of children for entrance into primary school to focus on the young child and the parent-child relationship. Work has been carried out in collaboration with community organizations and pre-school centres. It is expected that approximately 1500 children will be reached during 1993. Evaluation shows that the children of mothers who participated in the programme made similar gains to children who attended a preschool and that mothers have become more sensitive to their children’s needs. In addition the programme prevented the isolation of mothers, significantly increased their self esteem, and caused the growth of solidarity in the communities.
