The sweeping changes in the relationship between politicians and their constituents that direct elections ushered in was readily apparent in 2007. Despite the 2009 presidential election being two years off, electoral posturing was well under way-both in regard to the presidency, and in hotly contested local elections, such as the Jakarta gubernatorial election, which Fauzi Bowo won. At the same time, the issues that had emerged in the early reformasi period contimued to play out in the pages of the Report. Usman Hamid Commented on the continuing challenges to security sector reform. Zulkieflimansyah of the PKS outlined his party's attempts to toe the line between the idealism and Islamism of the party's loyalists, and the exigencies of becoming a major player. And a Supreme Court ruling showed the progress and remaining challenges to setting up a more inviting commercial environment.
