Background : Caffeine is a psychostimulant substance with short term effects such as alertness, higher concentration, increase of cognitive function. There are 97% of university students consumed excessive caffeine based on research that had been done in Lebanon. Meanwhile in Thailand, there are 58% of university students consumed excessive caffeine and have poor sleep quality. Academic overload, better physical and cognitive function, lack of sleeping time are some of the reasons for university students to consume caffeine. In this research, aiming to get the picture on caffeine consumption in medical faculty at the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and to know if there are different characteristic of caffeine consumption between preclinical and clinical students and the reasons for this consumption behavior.
Method : In this cross-sectional descriptive study, questionnaire based among preclinical and clinical year students. The study population consists of 120 medical students. The quitionnaires are demographic and caffeine consumption questionnaire. They are validity pretested before used in this research.
Results : Caffeine consumption in 99,2% with the highest substance is coffee (91,7%), and consumed daily basis by 57,5% of sample.
Conclusions : Caffeine consumption behavior and daily basis consumption are considerably high in mild category comsumption. There are several reasons for consuming caffeine. In preclinical and clinical year students with night shifts, daily consumption of coffee is high. But in clinical year students without on goind night shifts, the daily consumption behavior is low. |
