BACKGROUND : Body mass index is a weight-to-height which is used as an indicator of obesity and underweight. One's body mass index is related to the one's body shape; therefore, it has an impact to one's self esteem. The aim of this study is to prove whether there is a relation between body mass index and level of selfesteem. METHOD : The study was conducted in 2017 using a cross sectional design. Samples of this study (n=114) were active fourth-year students in the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, Faculty of Medicine. Calculating one’s body mass and height ratio discovered the body mass index (BMI) and the level of self esteem was determined by BSQ. The data was collected primarily and analyzed using Spearman correlation test with significance level of p<0,05. RESULT : Some of the respondents are in the normal range of BMI (52,6 %) while some others are below the normal range (15,8 %) and the rests are above the normal range (31,5 %). From the total 114 respondents, most of the respondents have a normal self-esteem (79,2 %), whereas the rests have a below normal self-esteem (20,2 %). From the result it can be concluded that there is a correlation between body mass index and the level of self-esteem. CONCLUSION : There is a correlation between body mass index and the level of self-esteem. |
