This article describes the first two years of a project based in the English department at the University of Georgia, and titled 5emma4, an Electronic Markup and Management Application. The article discusses the ways in which this project enables the development, management, and evaluation of archived portfolios of student writing. An overview of the development and technical architecture of the project describes the importance of markup for the production and reception of the texts, as well as for the development of composition theory and pedagogy. The article concludes with some critical evaluation of the use of 5emma4, and identifies some areas of potential application for the future.
