Abstract
Self-esteem is an important factor for a person in order to cope with life's challenges. With a high self-esteem, one will have a better chance to deal with stressful environments. For children with cancer, self-esteem is needed to help them face the harsh nature of their treatment, and also affecting their fighting spirit to accomplish the treatment thoroughly. Self-esteem will also encourage children to progress through the growth phase in a good order. The aim of this research is to get a description of self-esteem, which consists of self-efficacy and self-respect among children with cancer, after they undergo a holistic education based on a character confidence development. Subjects of the research are children with cancer in their early and middle stages that is diagnosed with cancer at least 1 year in advance. Currently they are around 4-5 years old, and still under treatment in Dharmais National Cancer Hospital, Jakarta. From the initial number of 10 children as subjects, only 3 finally participated in the end. The program consists of four objectives which are delivered in 6 days with a daily duration of 2 hours. Besides the directly-given program, a co-parenting program regarding parenting/foster guidelines related to self-confidence is also given. Self-esteem is then measured by an observation sheet which is filled in before and after the program, anecdotal narrative observation. Moreover, interviews of the parents are also conducted. There are self-esteem's differences before and after program's implementation.
