Isi artikelThree cross-cultural experiments provided the data for a study of the relationship of register and cohesion to text comprehension. Schema theory proposes that comprehension is a constructive process in which previous knowledge is a powerful factor. Given culture-specific texts, it was predicted that the ways in which subjects used the linguistic reflexes that indicate the situation of the speech event and those that create textual cohesion would be affected by their cultural knowledge, assumptions, and beliefs. These predictions were supported.
