The present study attempts to look into engagement resources in five text genres, i.e. fiction, interview, academic, editorial, and news story texts, in terms of the Appraisal theory. The result shows that engagement is prominent in the selected academic texts as the have the highest distribution of engagement tokens among the five genres. Specifically, the fiction genre has been characterized by the highest distribution of engagement resource of mau in the context of Engagement: Heterogloss: Expand: Entertain: Modality: Modulation among the genres while the academic genre does not record any of its use in the texts. In addition, news story is related to factualness as Heterogloss: Expand: Attribute: Acknowledge is used to support the news story being written.
