The fact that Bahasa Indonesia has been adopted as a national language is something that every Indonesian should be grateful and proud. The language, which has been declared as the language of unity in Indonesia, has played a significant role in uniting the multicultural people of the country. At this point the language has developed into a language that is used in both formal as well informal situations. In the process of its development, however, the language has tolerated a number of deviations from the rules. As language and thought are interrelated, the writer argues that this phenomenon reflects the speakers' pattern of thinking that seems to be illogical. The phrase mengejar ketinggalan 'run after something that has fallen behind', for example, has been interpreted as 'catch up'. This paper explores a number of phenomena which indicate the way the Indonesian speakers think.
