One of the reasons for language shift is when a more dominant language is in favor of a less prestigious language. Indonesia is now witnessing a process of language shift that may affect the abbandonment of local languages. Bahasa Indonesia, the national language that has been widely used all over the country, has been accused as a “culprit” for the diminishing use of local languages. What makes it even more complicated is the negative behavior or attitude of a particular group of Indonesians towards Indonesian. This group, especially the younger generation, is no longer competent in the national language. This article explores the current social reality of language shift in Indonesia. |
