Abstract
Readability in reading passages is important for teachers to select appropriate reading materials which are suitable for the level of learners. In addition, passages also have to contain academic words to increase learner’s vocabulary in order to
achieve good comprehension. This study was conducted to provide a description of the readability, academic words of reading passages and comprehension level of exercises in English for Grade X Textbook published by Kemendikbud 2014.
The writer used twelve reading passages and exercises in the textbook as the sample of the data. The reading passages were processed using the readability formula proposed by Rudolf Flesch (1942) and range program as suggested by
Coxhead (2000) and the exercises were evaluated using Barrett’s taxonomy comprehension level (1968). The findings showed that only four reading passages which are suitable for tenth graders and only two reading passages contain more
than 25 academic words. While in comprehension level, the result showed that above 50% exercises were included in literal comprehension level or lower-order thinking. Based on the results of the study, the writer suggests that the reading
passages and exercises of the textbook should be reviewed and revised in order to provide good reading texts and appropriate exercises as students’ level in high school.
