Abstract
The study aims to identify a new genre of soccer match reporting in English language live text commentaries by examining the occurence of transitive verbs and syntactic features and comparing them to the Indonesian live text
commentaries. By referring to Ferguson (1983) and Bergh and Ohlander (2016), this research shows that both English and Indonesian commentaries have similarities and differences in the use of transitive verbs and syntactic features. Findings show that transitive verbs with object omission are not commonly used in both English and Indonesian live text commentaries. In terms of syntactic features, both English and Indonesian commentaries are dominant in using modifiers and results expression. In addition, the passive construction as an additional feature in both English and Indonesian live text commentaries is discovered. Passive constructions are used to give more attention to action than agent in a match. However, due to the difference in grammar between English and Indonesian, there are no simplifications and subject-dependent inversions that appeared in the Indonesian live text commentary.
