Isi artikel
A commentary on Aage B. Sorensen's "Toward a Sounder Basis for Class Analysis," which appears in this issue. The writer shares with Sorensen a desire to reconstruct an exploitation-centered concept of class; and, like Sorensen, he believes that a rigorous concept of exploitation can be formulated without utilizing the labor theory of value. However, he disagrees with Sorensen's argument that exploitation can be defined in a worthwhile way simply in terms of rent-generating processes or that an analysis built on such foundations will be satisfactory. In an effort to explain why he believes that rent alone does not provide a sounder basis for class analysis, the writer provides a brief summary of the main ideas of Sorensen's article. He then offers an explanation of an alternative conceptualization of exploitation that regards exploitation as not simply rent-generated advantages, but advantages that involve the appropriation of labor effort of the exploited by exploiters. Finally, he discusses the complex relationship between exploitation and rent.
