Abstract
The limited deposit of fossil fuels on Earth has pushed the development of renewable energy. One of the fastest growing sectors in renewable energy is wind energy with wind turbines that convert mechanical rotation to electricity. The efficiency of each wind turbine is different, depending on the ratio of power produced to power received. The more efficient a turbine is, the better it can perform. There are many ways to improve the performance of a wind turbine, and in this project two things are modified: the radius of the blade, 30 cm and 40 cm, and the blade’s airfoil using NACA 0020, 3420, and 6420, with 15% and 20% thickness ratio. Simulations are done using ANSYS® R15.0 to measure the fluid velocity at the moment before and after the turbine blades, and then to calculate the efficiency to find the optimum design for the blade. It was found that NACA 3415 with 15% thickness ratio and 30 cm length performed best with 11,86% efficiency.
