Abstract
53% of domestic waste comes from residential area. Garbage collecting job on PTB DKI Pondok Kelapa Resident is performed manually, with an aid of cart wheelbarrow. Massive amount of domestic waste and the use of completely manual material handling have made the job physically demanding. To accomplish their job, waste collectors have to exerts large amount of force while commiting in awkward postures. The two were risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). Key Indicator Method, Quick Exposure Check and Rapid Entire Body Assessment were used to gain a complete description about MSD risk within the job. The assessment result from these three methods has shown that there are high MSD risks contained in pulling and jimmying the cart work elements. High amount of load weight, material handling vehicle, work pace, movement accuracy and coupling were recognized as main causal factors of high level MSD risk in this job. Trunk, upper arms, lower arms and wrists were considered as body parts with most exposure with high level MSD risks. With the goal of minimizing the risk, new design of ergonomic cart named Ergobak has proposed. Five new features comprised of an additon of swivel wheel, disc brake system with parking brake lock, adjustable body support, brake hand winch, and storage compartment was added to Ergobak design. Improvement modification on Ergobak can be seen from its modified features such as adjustable handle, ergonomic gripping, hinged container deck combined with inclined plane, a notch on side wall and moved back of origin wheels. The new design of Ergobak guarantees the material handling vehicle remain in a balanced and stable position, allowing a more convenience handling and safety as well.
