Isi artikelThe main purpose of this study is to examine current junior high school English textbooks in Taiwan to see how the design of the four language skills and cultural information tits students" needs. Five different publishers provide the Ministry of Education (MOE) with approved junior high school English textbooks. A review of the literature on related research was consolidated to form a detailed evaluation form for the five series of textbooks. Two raters were involved in the grading and commenting on the design of the textbooks. Users" opinions, including those of teachers and students, were also collected through interviews and surveys. The raters* grades were analyzed by two way ANOVA (4x6 and 4x5) and one-way ANOVA. The results were tested by Sbsf&i'spost hoc test to see the differences among the factors. The major finding in this study is that all the examined textbooks put much emphasis on listening, speaking, and reading, but lesson writing. All textbooks provided practice of integrated skills and of culture and customs. However, more instruction could be provided in the area o\' language learning strategies. Finally, some suggestions for school teachers and textbook designers are provided.
