Isi artikelThis article studies emphatic sentences with the verb is and the relative in Eng-lish, Spanish and Chinese. It offers a complete description of the correspon-dences and divergences among these kinds of sentences (the so-called cleft and pseudo-cleft sentences) in the three languages. The first section introduces the terms of different linguists in regard to this topic. The second section investigates ditransitive verbs (verbs that can have two complements) in Chinese, with numerous examples accompanied by Pinyin pronunciation, literal translations, and grammatical explanations, so that non-Chinese speakers can understand and read the examples. On the one hand, the ditransitive verbs are classified into the following groups: a) send (ji Up), deliver/give (jiao 3£), pass (di j@|), sell (mai if), etc.; b) give (song jM), return (huan H), order (tuo jffc), etc.; c) cat (chT Il£), drink (he n^), take out (chou fttj), pick up (shou I|£), use (yong ffl), earn (ying H), steal (qiang $|), spend (huatt), ask for (yao||), etc.; d) ask (wen fu]), teach (jiao f&), tell (gao su talft)i bother (ma fan l$Ji'jff), etc.; e) other verbs; f) the verb gei (|o dar). On the other hand, the structural changes with ditransitive verbs are studied according to the following criteria: a) with marker of direct complement ba (fE); b) emphasis with Han (j|!); c) positive construction with bei ($£); d) structural change of the position of the topic; e) change to a relative sentence; f) change to a pseudo-cleft sentence. In this section, we analyze the six types of pseudo-cleft sentences. The third section presents a contrastive study observing the similarities and differences among these kinds of sentences in Chinese, Spanish and English.
