Computer-managed instruction (CMI) has had over a twenty-year history, dating back to the early 1960s. With the introduction of the microcomputer in the 1980s, renewed interest has been expressed in using this from of high technology for the intructional program. Today, computer-managed programs range from the use of electronic grade books to sophisticated programs that perform such funtions as diagnosis and perscription, performance monitoring, resource management, and the reporting and evaluating of the program effectiveness. This article addresses such topics as CMI usage, the range of CMI options, benefits and concerns of CMI, and guidelines for implementing a program.
